This is a scan of Volume 005 of Short Stories containing two issues (February 1891 and March 1891). While it doesn't have covers (or ads - or the table of contents) for the individual issues, it does have a nice scan of the original publisher's bound volume binding with the magazine logo on the front cover.
These early issues of Short Stories are far different from the later pulp issues of the magazine that most of us are familiar with. It was closer in format to its contemporary, The Black Cat, but unlike that magazine it relied more on reprints and translations from foreign publications than original content.

The February 1891 issue features "The House Of The Seven Heads," an English translation of a rather gruesome Dutch tale by Adriaan Schade van Westrum about an elderly female servant who
is left in charge of an Amsterdam mansion when her master goes to his country house for the winter. When seven hapless burglars attempt to rob the home, the servant somehow manages to summon the strength to go Xena, Warrior Princess on the robbers, lopping off their heads one by
one with a giant broadsword.
The story is based on a Dutch legend about an actual home in Amsterdam, the
House of the Heads (known as 'Huis met de Hoofden' in Dutch), a large
canal house on the Keizersgracht 123 in Amsterdam. The house was built
in 1622, according to plans designed by Pieter de Keyser.
The House of the Heads derives its name from the six ornaments shaped as heads,
which adorn the facade. There is a legend that the heads refer to six
thieves (as opposed to the seven in the story) who had tried to break in
the house and were then beheaded by the maid of the house. However, it
is accepted today that they are the images of the heads of six Roman
gods: Apollo with the laurel wreath (the arts); Ceres with the grain
(agriculture); Mercury with the winged helmet (trade); Minerva (wisdom);
Bacchus with the grapes (wine); and Diana with the half moon (hunt).
Adriaan Schade van Westrum (1865-1917) was a Dutch author and journalist who
was born in Amsterdam. In 1893, he migrated to the United States. From
1895 to 1908 he was the assistant editor of The Critic.
Starting in 1910, he became a member of the editorial staff of the New
York Tribune and served as their literary critic from 1913 until his
death in 1917.
